After purchasing the closed down Studebaker South Bend Indiana plant, Nate and Arnold Altman and Leo Newman came together to form the Avanti Motor Company. The Avanti was produced on the original Studebaker design and frames until 1987 when it was built on the General Motors platform. The General Motors platform provided significant technical advancements and it also enabled the production of the first Avanti convertible. It wasn't until 2004 that Ford chassis and engines replaced GM units. The Ford platforms with their longer wheelbase offered better handling and ride improvement. The last Avanti built was in 2007 on the Ford Mustang platform.
