Now owned by Nissan, Datsun originally began to produce cars in 1931 under the name "Datson." It was not until 1933 under Nissan control that the name was changed to Datsun. Nissan added the sun to DAT to honor the sun depicted in the Japanese flag. Datsun is more recognized for its Fairlady roadster and 240Z hatchback. As of March 1986 Nissan retired the iconic Japanese brand.
